Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV)

When a church accepts the Acts 1:8 challenge, It commits to fulfill Jesus' last spoken work
on earth by taking the gospel to its Jerusalem (Portsmouth), Judea (Virginia), Samaria (our nation),
and the ends of the earth (the whole world).

Jerusalem Ministry and the Power of Prayer

Dayna Austin, Ceceilia Jones, Lois Brisbin, Dr. Philip Parker and Carol Rowe (shown in pictures)

We are an Acts 1:8 church and in this verse, the Spirit gives us some promises.

With prayer at the helm of our committee, the purpose of the Jerusalem Ministry is to build relationships with the
surrounding neighborhoods of Calvary Baptist Church so those families will experience the love of Christ through
us and will accept Christ as their Lord and Savior that they may feel the fullness of joy that Christ intends for all who seek Him.

On Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., heavens gated were bombarded with prayers from the Jerusalem Ministry
here at Calvary Baptist Church.  Lists were handed out and each child (from infant to teen) was prayed for individually.
As we called the name of each child, the anointing of the Lord flowed just as it did from Aaron's beard.

World Changers

On July 5th thru 12th, 2008, over two hundred young people and adults participated in a "World Changers" community
restoration project in the Cradock area of Portsmouth.  Several local churches provided runners to insured that supplies
were available to fix or repair many houses and also one church.  Some jobs were as simple as scraping, patching and painting
to more challenging work such as window replacement and complete roofs or building a handicap accessible ramp.

Jane Goldman and the Kitchen Committee of Calvary provided lunch each day for one of the groups working in Cradock.
Bill White and Gary Gaddy served as project coordinators to insure that the work was completed in a timely manner.
Our youth attended two of the evening worship and praise sessions that were held at Cradock Middle School.  The
accomplishments were published in the Virginian Pilot and the completion of work was celebrated by a Cradock
Community Block Party.

World Changers will visit Portsmouth again in 2009 and help restore other houses or structures in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Adopt-A- Spot

October 25, 2008, the Jerusalem Ministry started their Adopt-A-Spot ministry in an effort to clean up the surrounding
community of Calvary. The Adopt-A-Spot Program enables us to become an active participant in the cleanliness of our
community by collecting litter and beautifying the streets in our neighborhood. The Clean Community Commission
supplied safety information, trash bags, litter grabbers, safety vests, and gloves for the scheduled cleanup. The
area that was cleaned has been named "The Square" and its boundaries are Martin Luther King Blvd., High St.,
Jamestown Ave., and London Blvd. with streets of Constitution, Queen, and Liverpool in between.  The cleanup
effort began
at 10:00 a.m. and lasted for about 1-1/2 hours.  If you are interested in helping with this effort, please
contact Ceceilia Jones through the church office.
