Sermon Notes - “The Other Side of Christmas”- Matthew 2:13-18

There is a certain sadness that seems to descend upon many of us after the celebration of Christmas.  The Christmas trees that were so beautifully decorated have been placed on the curb with the trash.  The festive lights that illuminated our homes have been extinguished, and all of the presents have been unwrapped and put away.  Even the account of Christ’s birth ends on a seemingly forlorn note.  Mary and Joseph must flee to Egypt because Herod seeks to kill the Christ Child.  Yes, the account of Christ’s birth in Matthew reminds us that we live in a fallen world where the forces of evil are constantly striving to get the upper hand.  Nevertheless, there is a great spiritual truth which we need to embrace as we face the dawn of a new year.  God’s purposes and plans for our world can be challenged and at times seemingly thwarted, but never defeated.  As Paul so aptly declared in I Corinthians 15:57, “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
