DEACON ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION
This morning we are ordaining and installing those Deacons who will be serving our church family during the next four years. We will be ordaining Tom Heflin and Conrad Strickland. Jack Austin, who could not be with us this morning, was ordained at the Deacons’ Retreat on Saturday. We will also be installing three Deacons who have agreed to continue serving. They are Tate McEachern, David House, and Woodrow Wood.
COMMITTEE NIGHT
We will meet this evening in the fellowship hall beginning at 6:00 PM. After brief introductory comments by the pastor, each of our church’s committees will meet together to review job descriptions and elect officers for the coming year. Refreshments will be served. Every member of every committee is encouraged to attend.
WALK FOR LIFE
The Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater will be hosting the annual “Walk for Life” fund raiser at Chesapeake Square Mall this Saturday, January 19th, between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Sign-up sheets for those interested in walking and for those making contributions to this important ministry are now available in the church office.
SANCTITY OF LIFE SUNDAY
Next Sunday we will be focusing our attention upon the sanctity of life as a precious gift bestowed upon us by a loving God. Our guest speaker will be Yvonne Mackey. Mrs. Mackey started with the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater in 2000 as a volunteer prior to her employment as Pregnancy Center Director. As an employee, she managed the Portsmouth and Suffolk Pregnancy Centers for 5 years before being promoted to Vice President of Ministry Operations.
MISSIONS SURVEY
Our Missions Council is continuing to survey the church for our interests and abilities for missions. Please fill out the short survey form in your Sunday School Class. Additional forms are available on the buffet and can be turned in to the office. Thank you.
FARM FRESH RECEIPTS
During January Farm Fresh will donate double points to our church for every dollar spent in their stores. If you shop there, save that portion of the receipt that reads, “Retain this receipt and give to your church for redemption by May 31, 2008.” A box has been placed in the lobby for the receipts.
LADIES WINTER BIBLE STUDY
This winter we will be creating a Scrapbook Legacy of Faith: This Is My Story by Lisa Welchel. This Is My Story is a fun and rewarding adventure that guides women in creating keepsake “storybooks” that tell of God’s love and faithfulness. Through daily Bible study and journaling activities, women remember and record the significant faith stories and spiritual markers of their lives. Then they come together once a week for a time of fellowship, faith-sharing, and scrapbooking. By the end of the study, each woman will have a beautiful storybook, which tells of her personal walk with God. It will be a treasured heirloom for children, grandchildren, or other loved ones. No prior scrapbooking experience required! The Bible Study will begin Saturday, February 2nd at 9:30 am and continue for 7 consecutive Saturday mornings. Please see the bulletin board outside of the sanctuary or contact Connie Powell (399-1050) for more information and to sign up.

Sermon Notes - “Servants of the Lord” - Acts 6:1-7
What does it mean to be a deacon? The word literally means “servant” or “table waiter”, and its origin may go all the way back to the seven men who were appointed to care for the widows in the early church. This morning we will be installing and ordaining six men who have agreed to serve as deacons in our church. Like the pastoral staff they are the Lord’s servants who have been called to meet the needs of God’s people in this fellowship of believers.
